an IDPs camp in North East NigeriaThe U. S. has announced nearly 92 million dollars as additional humanitarian assistance to people affected by the ongoing conflict and severe food insecurity in Nigeria and the Lake Chad Basin region.

With this announcement, the U.S is providing more than 291 million dollars in humanitarian assistance since the 2016 fiscal year, according to a statement from the Information Office of the U.S Embassy on Monday.

The embassy said the funds made available would assist people affected by the Boko Haram-related conflict and other related humanitarian crisis.

“The U. S. continues to be the single largest humanitarian donor to the region.

“This new funding to UN and non-governmental organisation partners will help tens of thousands of people receive critically needed humanitarian assistance, including food, water, shelter, and services to address acute hygiene, protection, and nutritional needs,” it stated.

The embassy said that in Nigeria, Niger, Cameroon and Chad, the conflict had left more than 6.4 million people in need of emergency food assistance and displaced 2.6 million people.

It quoted the UN estimates of requiring additional one billion dollars as needed to meet the humanitarian needs of people in 2017.

The U.S. government further reiterated its call on other donors to contribute additional humanitarian assistance for the millions of people in the region whose lives had been affected.
