Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State Tuesday evening commissioned 500-meter concrete-paved roads in Benin City, the State capital.
The newly paved roads, Nevis and Ogeife Streets, which link two major roads, namely, Mission and Forestry roads, were constructed by AG Dangote Construction Company Limited.
Addressing the residents before commissioning the roads, Obaseki who said his commitment was to construct 3,000 kilometres of road across the State in his first tenure, disclosed that the bulk of the roads would be built using the micro concrete technology.
He said the project was to show that concrete road is possible in Nigeria and Edo state, using the Nevis and Ogeife streets as pilot scheme, just as he assured that he would soon begin the construction of 45 roads using conrete.
“This roads mark a revolution about the way we would now build roads in Edo. We would now involve our communities in the design and construction of our roads.
“When we started this roads, I asked the community to bring 50 youths to be trained on concrete road construction. Every other road to be constructed would take similar process so that they would know how to build roads and other infrastructure,” Obaseki said.
The Governor commended the company and the state engineers for their commitment towards the timely completion of the project, noting that it was completed on schedule.
“We don’t have to wait for foreign exchange before we can construct roads because we have the sand, latrite, concrete and people. I assured you that with the experience we have on this road, we would build 45 roads across the state immediately,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Managing Director, AG Dangote Construction Company, Ashafi Jumar, commended Obasek for embracing the micro concrete road construction technology.
He said the road constructed with local content was to show that concrete roads can be built within shortest period and that it is durable and cheap to maintain.
