Professor Olanike Adeyemo

As predicted by the magazine, Professor Adeyinka Abideen Aderinto, 48 and Professor Olanike K. Adeyemo, 46 beat their opponents by a wide margin to emerge as the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) and Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research, Innovation and Strategic Partnership), RISP, respectively.

Aderinto, a lecturer in the Department of Sociology, Faculty of the Social Sciences and current Dean of Postgraduate School scored 350 votes to beat his opponent, Professor Olajire Fagbola of the Department of Agronomy, Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry who scored 68 votes.

There are strong indications, according to sources in the university, that Aderinto is eyeing the office of the institution’s Vice Chancellor after his tenure as DVC. “Aderinto belongs to the right circle in the university. The powers that be want him to be the next VC and he is also working towards it”, one of the sources said.

Also, Adeyemo of the Department of Veterinary Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine scored 371 votes to beat her opponent, Professor Miracle O. Oyewola of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Technology who scored 41 votes.

The election that produced the new DVCs was held today between the hours of 10am and 2pm.

The magazine learnt that Adeyemo would be the first DVC RISP and the fourth female DVC in the premier university.

This is coming on the occasion of this year’s International Women’s Day.

The Premier University employed Adeyemo in 1999 and she has risen through the ranks to a full professor in 2011.
Adeyemo, who is the current Head of Department of Veterinary Public Health and Preventive Medicine, had served in many administrative capacities in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, and the university at large. She holds a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (1994) and Master of Veterinary Public Health (1998) degrees, and a PhD (2005) in Aquatic Epidemiology and Toxicology; all from the University of Ibadan.

She was appointed epidemiological and toxicological expert on the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee (JECFA-2011-2016, 2017-2021) and a consultant to Milieudefensie, the Netherlands in 2010. More recently, she has developed molecular biomarkers of oil spill and dispersants pollution in fish and was invited to present her findings at the 2015 Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative Oil Spill and Ecosystem Science Conference, Houston.

She has 96 publications in learned journals and belongs to over 10 professional bodies.

Aderinto, who had served the university in various capacities, obtained all his degrees, B.Sc, M.Sc and Ph.D, from the institution’s Department of Sociology as well as attending courses in leadership and in the management of higher education within and outside the country.

His first academic appointment as an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Sociology, UI, was dated 1992 and he rose through the ranks to attain the position of Professor of Sociology in 2009.
