The Benue State Civil Service Commission said on Friday that it was developing a database to have information on every civil servant in the state.
The Chairman of the commission, Prof. Jerry Agada, made the disclosure while speaking in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Makurdi.
Agada said the database would enable the government to know the exact number of civil servants employed in the state and those due for retirement.
He said the measures were aimed at repositioning the service for higher service delivery.
“We cannot sit here and watch things go wrong or impact negatively on civil servants without any effort at correcting it, especially in the area of promotion.”
The chairman said that on assumption of office, he met a backlog of promotion cases but that the problem was now receiving attention.
Agada said also that recruitment of staff for the state’s schools of nursing and health technology at Agasha, had been carried out to meet accreditation requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
Agada, who foreclosed possibility of recruitment into the state’s civil service, said that “apart from these two recruitments, general recruitment into the civil service is not on the cards at the moment”.
He said that he was engaged by the government to reposition the civil service, warning those distorting their records for the purpose of extending their service to desist from the act or face the wrath of the law.
The chairman, however, appealed to the governor to expedite action on the renovation of the commission’s office complex.
