The President, Students Union Government, SUG, The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Peter Edema, and eighteen other students detained last Friday at the Oyo state Police Command headquarters, Eleyele Ibadan have been freed.
Confirming the release, the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, Adekunle Ajisebutu, said that the students were detained for assaulting policemen on duty, breach of public peace and invasion of the command.
Ajisebutu said that the students who came to the command in a bus were allowed into the command because they lied at the entrance that they wanted to pray in the command’s mosque saying, “When they go to the gate, the policemen stopped them and asked them about their mission. They told the policemen that they only wanted to pray and they were allowed to pray. But rather than going to the mosque, they came to the commands administrative building and started demanding for the release of their colleagues arrested and detained. They became highly unruly and were comporting themselves in a way that breached public peace”.
But the released students debunked the claim of the police spokesperson saying that they were at the command to bail two of their colleagues who were wrongly arrested by the police.
Among the students who confirmed their release were the union treasurer, Mariam Anifowose, and one Edema who claimed to have been released Sunday evening stressing that the police had to release them when they got the information that the students were planning mass protest.
