An Arkansas teacher accused of calling Michelle Obama a chimpanzee is facing calls for his resignation.

Trent Bennett, a high school instructor in rural Malvern, appeared to share a racist Facebook post about the president and his family.

“Michelle Obummer … America’s First Chimp,” the teacher said in a post which is now no longer visible.

When challenged about the remarks, Bennett said “Just good to see that nasty chimp and her spider monkey husband gone for good,” according to KARK.

Malvern School District, which is currently on a holiday break, said in a statement that it had become aware of an employee post “that was inappropriate, insensitive, and used racially charged rhetoric.”

It said that it is investigating the post and will take action after a review.

Others, including the local NAACP, have called for Bennett to not return to his job when school reconvenes.

“There is no place in an educational system for someone in a public position of authority that is willing to publicly make the comments that you are alleged to have made,” Arkansas State Conference NAACP President Rizelle Aaron said in a letter to the teacher.

Some parents and students are planning on boycotting Malvern High School’s sporting events unless Bennett is fired, according to KATV.

The teacher did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The alleged comments are similar to a string of racist insults towards Michelle Obama in recent months where social media users have lost their jobs.

Pamela Taylor, the head of the Clay County Development Corporation in West Virginia, was fired for a post-election comment calling the First Lady an “ape in heels.”

Her Facebook friend Beverly Whaling, the mayor of Clay, resigned after posting in support of the comment.

Michelle Herren, an anesthesiologist in Denver, also left her job after backlash from a post saying that Michelle Obama had a “monkey face” and “poor ebonic English.”
