The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN reports that the Chief Medical Director, University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Prof Michael Ibadin, says the hospital recorded modest achievements in 2016 despite poor funding.
Ibadin told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Benin on Wednesday that the hospital got full accreditation for its Dentistry Department after seven years of pursuit.
“Some departments in the hospital also got full accreditation that will last for five years. The departments are Dentistry, Orthopaedic, Mental Health, Ophthalmology and Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT).
“Before you are given full accreditation, you must have the needed facilities and personnel, which we have fulfilled,’’ the CMD said.
Ibadin said that the School of Health Information Management was also accredited to run Higher National Diploma programmes.
He listed other achievements to include, renovation of the hospital’s Neurosurgery ward that was destroyed by fire earlier in the year and regular payment of personnel salaries.
He said the hospital also completed the Pathology complex and offices for Family Medicine and Institute of Health Technology.
The CMD told NAN that in the outgoing year, the hospital also bought a CT scan, four ventilators and aesthetics procedure for surgery, all costing N50 million.
Ibadin expressed the hope that the hospital would complete some projects and send some of its staff on foreign trainings in 2017.
“We will complete ongoing projects such as office blocks for Paediatrics and Biomedical Engineering and Renal Dialysis units.
“We will buy some equipment for our Intensive Care Unit while an Ophthalmologist will be trained abroad on how to carry out operation at the back of the eyes,’’ he said.
