The Presidency has said allegations by some protesters that allowances due to former President Goodluck Jonathan as a former Nigerian leader has been stopped was false.
Malam Shehu Garba, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity described the claim as untrue in a statement on Friday.
“We have confirmed with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) that the former President Goodluck Jonathan and the other past leaders were paid their allowances up to the second quarter.
He also said though the past leaders have not been paid third quarter allowances but will get their dues when remittances are received by the SGF.
Garba, also denied the story of Goodluck Jonathan’s bank account closure, saying it was false. “It is not known to the investigation agencies.”
“The National Security Adviser to the President is not aware of this bank account closure”
“The DG SSS is unaware of it, the EFCC is unaware and the IG of Police is not in the know.”
“With all of these agencies not being involved, how then could a thing like that happen?
“In a dream perhaps! To put it starkly, we believe there is a clear motive for the demonstration that is different from that which was being canvassed,” Garba said.
Scores protesters, made up of mostly Ijaw youths had on Thursday grounded commercial activities in Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa State to protest alleged constant harassment of the former President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife, Patience, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
They youths displayed different banners and placards with inscriptions to indicate that the Buhari administration is persecuting the former President.
