An Indonesian politician, Damayanti Putranti, was sentenced to four and a half years imprisonment for accepting 8.1 billion rupiah (620,000 dollars) in bribe money when she was a legislator.

The Jakarta anti-corruption court found the politician guilty of abusing her position to “enrich herself or others.”

Prosecutors said she received kickbacks from a company in return for helping it to win a project to build roads in Maluku province.

Damayanti was dismissed as member of the ruling Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle and stripped of her membership in the parliament in January after she was arrested.

Indonesia has made progress in fighting endemic graft since an anti-corruption commission was established in 2003 with the power to arrest and detain suspects.

The commission had prosecuted former ministers, governors, legislators and central bank chiefs, with a conviction rate of nearly 100 per cent.

Indonesia ranked 88th out of 168 countries in the 2015 corruption perception index released by Transparency International, with number one being the least corrupt. (dpa/NAN)
