Widodo: tough stance against hard drugs

Indonesia said a Nigerian is among the drug convicts it will execute this year as part of the plans of President Joko Widodo crackdown on drug, Reuters has reported.

At least 16 prisoners would be executed this year and more than double that number next year, the news agency quoted Attorney General H.M. Prasetyo as saying.

Among the foreigners, he added, are a Nigerian and Zimbabwean convicts.

But the Prasetyo did not give the particular or the offences the Nigerian was guilty of.

Earlier media reports had indicated that 10 foreigners, including two Nigerians, were among 15 convicts on death row in the Asian country.

A Jakarta Police chief had confirmed earlier that one Pakistani, two Nigerians, two Senegalese, one Zimbabwean and four Chinese nationals, were among those to be executed over charges of smuggling of hard drugs in 2016.

Under Indonesian law, each convict would face a squad of 10 shooters.

Last year, Indonesia executed 14 convicts, all but two of them foreigners, in a move that drew international condemnation.

Among the executed convicts were four Nigerians- Martins Anderson, 50, charged with possession of heroin, Okwudili Oyatanze, 41, also charged for smuggling heroin, Jamiu Abashin, 50, was also executed for smuggling heroin and Sylvester Nwolise, 42 killed for the same offence.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo, who took office in 2014, has taken a tough stance against drug trafficking, saying that the country was facing a drug emergency.
