A U.S.-based Nigerian, Antwon Hicks, has set a new national record in the 110 metres hurdles at the 2016 Warri Relays and Rio Olympics Trials in Sapele, Delta.

Hicks ran 13.26 seconds to surpass the existing record of 13.42 secs set by Williams Erese in July 2003 in Italy.

The joyful athlete told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that he would work harder to represent Nigeria well at the summer Olympics in August in Brazil.

“I feel relieved at the victory. I am going to work harder to represent Nigeria at the Rio Olympics.

“I feel at home coming to Nigeria, where my grandparents are from Delta.

“This is my first Olympics, and I will do the best I can do to win a medal for Nigeria,” he said.

NAN reports that athletes at the competition are featuring in various events, such as long jump, high jump, discus, javelin and hurdles in both the male and female categories.

The three-day event is organised by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) to select athletes who will represent the country at the forthcoming Summer Olympics.

Athletes from various states in the country, as well as the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Nigeria Police, are participating in the events.(NAN)
