Charles Okah, a leader of Movement for Emancipation of Niger Delta, MEND who is being tried for being the mastermind of October, 2010 Independence Day bomb blasts at Eagles Square, Abuja has been locked up in a special cell at Kuje prisons where he has been in detention following a jail break at the facility on Friday evening.
Prison sources informed this magazine that one of the inmates believed to have escaped during the jail break was one Obi Nwabueze who is being tried on terrorism charges alongside Okah.
He was allegedly discovered missing during head count of prisoners on Friday evening.
Prison authorities believe Okah who is younger brother to Henry Okah, the MEND leader is in jail in South Africa mastermind the escape of his co-accused, hence his confinement to solitary cell.
Sources who spoke to this magazine dismissed speculations that the prisoners escaped by climbing the fence of the prison.
They argued that the fence is too high for a prisoner to climb.
Hence, they argued that Nwabueze must have received help from some prison warders to be able to escpe from the facility.
It was gathered that one other prisoner whose identity could not yet be ascertained was also discovered missing.
Nwabueze, according to charges filed in court by the Federal Government against the bomb attack suspects, rigged the vehicle used for the attack.
Nwaabueze and Okah are being tried on charges bordering on felony and terrorism.
The court had earlier sentenced the third co-accused in the bombing incident, Edmund Ebiware, to life imprisonment.
Francis Enabore, spokesperson for the Nigeria Prison Service had earlier dismissed reports that Okah himself escaped from the prison, though he acknowledged there was an incident at the facility.
He said the Service will issue a statement about the incident later as it is still taking census of inmates.
