Nigeria’s Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki has revealed that N12 million was stolen in his Ilorin, Kwara State home about two weeks ago.
The Senator, a former governor of Kwara State said this in a statement issued by his media adviser, Yusuph Olaniyonu on Sunday.
The statement was issued to refute claims in an online publication that the amount stolen was N30 million and include various denominations of foreign currencies. The publication also claimed that the money was given to the Senate President by the Kwara State government for celebration of the Muslim fast of Ramadan.
But as Saraki stated in the statement, the N12 million was stolen by some unknown persons who broke into the safe in the administrative office attached to the house.
He added that the incident had since been reported and the Kwara State Police command are investigating the theft with a view to nail the culprits.
The Senate President also denied that the money was given to him by the Kwara State government.
The Senate President said he will allow the police to do their work and unravel the person or persons behind this theft while describing the claim that the stolen money was given to him by the Kwara State Government as “unfounded and unwarranted.”
