Governor Umar Ganduje of Kano has announced the arrest of one Alhaji Dauda, described as the prime suspect in the murder of 74 years old Mrs. Bridget  Agbaheme  who was mobbed to death at Kofar Wambai market, Kano last Thursday by religious extremists.

The extremists had accused her of committing blasphemy against the Islamic religion.

The killing of mother of one who was married to Pastor Mike Agbaheme, a senior pastor with Deeper Life Bible Church had generated tension in the state since Thursday.

There was heavy deployment of security operatives across the city on Friday out of fears that the rising anger over the killing, especially among the non indigenes may degenerate into violence.

To douse the tension, Governor Ganduje on Saturday morning convened a stakeholders meeting attended by members of the state’s chapter of Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Islamic scholars, representatives of the Igbo community, security operatives and husband of the deceased.

In the six point resolutions agreed to by the stakeholders which he personally read at the end of the meeting, Governor Ganduje thanked those worked assiduously to douse the tension generated by the killing and those who facilitated the arrest of the prime suspect.

He also expressed his condolences to the husband of the deceased and her family while he promised to work with all the necessary stakeholders to ensure justice is done with the arrest of the main suspect by the police.

While urging the religious leaders to intensify efforts in enlightening the general public on the dangers of taking laws into their hands, the Governor also appealed the stakeholders, particularly the Council of Ulamas CAN leadership to also publicly condemn the barbaric act. Other stakeholders also expressed their happiness with the resolution reached at the end of the meeting.

However, the husband of the woman stressed at the meeting that the killing of his 74 year old wife was “illegal and unjustifiable.”
