The management of University of Ibadan, UI, has once again lamented the reduction in the monthly personnel allocation from the Federal Government to the Institution.

In a release to all the staff, the institution’s management stated, “It has become very imperative for the University Administration to once again inform the University community, especially all members of staff, of the continuous under-funding of our personnel grant. From December 2015 till date, personnel grants have been inadequate to fully pay our personnel costs”.

The management stated further, “The Administration was shocked again on Wednesday 25 May, 2016 when it received the personnel grant for May 2016 in the sum of N 782,346,495.59 even after the 2016 budget had been approved by Mr. President. This sum could only pay 92.42% of our personnel cost for the month and as usual, a meeting of stakeholders in the university was convened on Thursday 26 May 2016 to discuss the way forward. In attendance were the leaders of all the staff unions and leaders of cooperative societies”.

The statement concluded, “The Administration will continue to reach out to the appropriate authorities to seek redress for this situation and ensure that the shortfalls from December 2015 to May 2016 are released”.

Presenting the position of the personnel cost, personnel grants received and shortfall from December 2015 to May 2016 shows that in December 2015, for personnel cost and personnel grant received were N 965,508,185.70 and N 663,872,634.60 respectively resulting in a shortfall of N 301,635,551.10.

In January, it was N 878,148,127.28 and N 782,346,495.59 and a shortfall of N 95,081,631.69; February, N 888,545,476.96, N 782,346,495.59 and a shortfall of N 106,198,981.37; March, N 877,193,065.55, N 782,346,495.59 and a shortfall of N 94,846,569.96; April, N 879,134,419.41, N 782,346,495 and a shortfall of N 96,787,923.82; and for May, N 878,756,811.03, N 782,346,495.59 and a shortfall of N 94,898,518.25.

The summary reflects that the total of N 5, 367,286,085.93 and N 4,575,605,112.55 were received for personnel cost and personnel grant between December and May with a total of N 790,169,176.19 as shortfall.

In another development, in a bid to find a lasting solution to incessant protests in the institution, the management of the premier university has summoned the students’ parents to a crucial meeting.

The outcome of the meeting scheduled to hold at Trenchard Hall in the university on Tuesday June 7 2016 will determine how soon the institution which was closed down last month due to a violent protest will be opened
