Authorities in Cape Verde said that a soldier shot dead 11 people on a military base late on Tuesday in the Atlantic Ocean archipelago off West Africa.

There are suspicions that the gunman has links with drug traffickers which the authorities have been checkmating on the island.

A report on Wednesday in Praia said manhunt has been under way overnight for the suspect, who fled the shooting, which was on the island of Santiago.

It said eight of the dead were members of the military , including the commanding officer at the base.

“Among the three civilians killed were two Spanish technicians who had been conducting maintenance work on the base.

The report said preliminary investigation suggested that the apparent massacre was linked to drug trafficking.

Meanwhile, government has announced the suspension of ferry service to the island, but the aviation authorities said air service in the country had not been halted.
