Madrid topple Barcelona on La Liga summit

Gareth Bale: after he scored the winner

Real Madrid have overtaken Barcelona and Atletico Madrid on La Liga table for the first time this season, after coming from behind to beat hosts Rayo Vallecano Saturday afternoon.

Two quick goals in the first 14 minutes of the game by Adrian Embarba and Miku appeared to have dented Madrid’s league ambitions, but they responded splendidly, with Gareth Bale reducing the deficit on the 35th minute.

On resumption of play in the second half, Lucas Vazquez equalised for the visitors and Bale turned in the winner with a solo run from the left flank.

Madrid now have 81 points, two ahead of both Atletico  Madrid and Barcelona, who were tied on the table with 79 points. Barcelona have goal advantage over Atletico.

Both teams would play later today to know whether they would regain the lead.

Barcelona are hosting Sporting Gijon while Atletico host Malaga. Malaga are 10th on the table, while Gijon are 18th,  in the relegation zone.
