Busayo: mother of the 2 year-old girl

The police at Gowon Estate in Egbeda Area of Lagos  have commenced investigation into what led to the death of a two-year old girl that was found dead inside a well.

Rachael Oluniyi was recovered from the well where she reportedly fell into and died.

The incident happened at  Jezze Street where her father lives. And her death came  barely 24 hours after  her father, Gbenga Oluniyi seized her from her mum in Abeokuta, Ogun state. He then brought the girl to Lagos.

The police and residents are puzzled about how the girl scaled the small barricade around the well.

Residents said the girl’s parents, Busayo and Gbenga Oluniyi  have not enjoyed cordial relations over  her custody and the woman’s decision to work in Ogun state.

According Busayo, she had to come to Lagos to take the girl  back, but  her husband refused, despite the girl crying she wanted to follow her.

Three hours  after she left Lagos,  she received a call that Rachael was dead .

When she asked her husband how it happened, she was told that she fell inside the well and died.

Following the incident, the matter was reported to the police who assisted and recovered her body.

Gbenga was briefly detained and released and was asked to go and bury the baby.

But  Busayo objected and insisted that the matter should be investigated to know  what actually  happened, how she fell inside the well that was properly covered.

The  corpse of the baby was still lying inside Gbenga’s  apartment on Tuesday.

Gbenga  said he was still in  shock about how his daughter died.

At the Gowon Estate police station, a source said the police have since commenced investigation.
