The Legal Aid Council in Kano on Sunday said it received no fewer than 64 cases from aggrieved individuals in February.

The Coordinator of the council in the state, Alhaji Abubakar Umar said 42 of the cases were criminal, while the remaining 22 were civil cases.

He said the council had disposed eight of the criminal cases and nine civil cases, while the remaining were pending in various courts.

“Some of the complainants prefer to solve their cases at our office. Complainants are always encouraged to resolve their cases out of court to ensure amicable solution.”

He said most of the civil cases recorded were on inheritance, marriage, debt and land disputes, while the criminal cases were on rape, homicide and armed robbery, among others.

He, therefore, called for adequate funding of the agency to enable it to discharge its activities effectively.

“Inadequate fund has been a major challenge to our operations. So, we need more funds to enable us to carry out our duties.”

He said lack of operational vehicles was also hindering the agency’s activities, adding that its staff had to move from one court to another for the disposal of the cases.
