Atletico Madrid qualified for the last 8 of the Champions League following a dramatic shoot out in the Vicente Calderon Stadium on Tuesday night while Manchester City will make their first ever quarterfinal appearance after a lacklustre goalless draw with Dynamo Kiev.

At Madrid, 120 minutes football failed to produce a goal between Atletico Madrid and PSV Eindhoven. Actually it was the first time a Champions League knockout tie had gone to penalties without a goal in either leg. Then 14 penalties in the shoot out were dispatched without error before PSV forward Luciano Narsingh hit the 15th against the bar giving Juanfran Torres the chance to seal a nerve-wracking night for the Spanish side.

It is the second time in two years Atletico have reached the quarter-finals following a shoot-out after last season’ s triumph over Bayer Leverkusen.

At Manchester, the hosts entered their first Champions League quarterfinals on a 3-1 aggregate win.

Manchester City’s defense stayed solid while Kiev, needing to score three goals to stand a chance of progressing, could hardly pose as a threat to the hosts.

But Manchester City suffered a blow just five minutes into the match as captain Vincent Kompany limped off with a recurrence of his long-standing calf problems that could keep him out for a month.

Two quarterfinals slots remain to be decided as Bayern Munich will face Juventus on Wednesday after a 2-2 first leg draw when Barcelona take on Arsenal with the Spanish Club leading at 2-0.

Benfica, Paris Saint-Germain, VfL Wolfsburg and Real Madrid already advanced.

Despite the Kompany blow, City’s outgoing coach, Manuel Pellegrini was happy that the team qualified for the quarter final stage.

“We are very happy for the achievement because it’s important for this club to improve every season,” said the Chilean.

“The last two seasons we were unlucky to play against Barcelona in the round of 16. We now arrive in the best eight teams in the competition for the first time.

“We will see how far we can go. We had a very difficult group with teams from the best leagues in Europe and we won it.

“We are now more experienced for winning the group and this means we are better prepared to go further.”
