Bayern Munich are through to the quarter finals of the UEFA Champions League, after coming from the dead to force an extra time, with a decisive goal at 90 minutes by Thomas Mueller that levelled scores at 2-2 with Juventus.

Then in the second half of extra time, Bayern scored two goals within two minutes, with Thiago Alcantra netting first at close range in the 108th minute. Then Kingsley Coman after a solo run, curled a beautiful ball into the net, from the right side, just outside 18 yards, that caught Juventus keeper, Gianluigi Buffon completely flummoxed. It was Bayern leading at home 4-2 and 6-4 aggregate.

Juventus had pumped two goals inside the German league leaders’ net before the half hour, with goals by Paul Pogba and Juan Cuadrado.

Over 40 minutes of intense and gritty game thereafter saw eight players, five from Juventus and three from Bayern bagging yellow cards. Robert Lewandowski, who also got a yellow, finally put Bayern back into reckoning with a 73rd minute strike that reduced the deficit to 1-2.

Then came Mueller’s last gasp header that brought the Germans back from the dead, in the first minute of injury time. Juventus appeared to have been drained of their spirit thereafter.

“This was a great game for the fans,” Pep Guardiola, coach of Bayern said. “We played against the finalist of last year and knew they are a great team.

“I have to give a big compliment to my team. It’s very complicated to win against an Italian team after going 2-0 down.”

Philipp Lahm echoed many of his coach’s sentiments, but pointed to a stunning Manuel Neuer save off Cuadrado just before half-time as a turning point.

“First of all thanks to the crowd, “Lahm added. “It was an incredible atmosphere and the fans pushed us forward.

“You can see how close it is between the top teams, we could have conceded a third goal just before half-time.

“But we knew we could make it from two goals down, the players who came on did an outstanding job.

In the second match of the night, Barcelona crushed Arsenal 3-1, with goals by Messi, Neymar and Suarez, winning 5-1 aggregate. Arsenal’s consolation goal was scored by Egyptian international, Mohamed Elneny.
