Angelique Kerber ended the fairy tale run of British qualifier Johanna Konta at the Australian Open, defeating her 7-5, 6-2 in the second semi-final played Thursday.
The left handed Kerber, aged 28, is seeded 7th in the tournament.
She had upset Victoria Azarenka, former world number one, en route to the semi-final, while Konta had demolished every one on her way, including Venus Williams that she beat in the first round.
Konta, making her main draw debut in Melbourne Park, was bidding to become the first British woman to reach a major final since Virginia Wade at Wimbledon 1977 but she fell short against the composed seventh seed.
Kerber proved too steady from the baseline, committing just 11 unforced errors to Konta’s 36 during the clash that lasted one hour and 22 minutes.
