The death has been reported of Chief  Sunday Adedayo Adewusi, former Inspector General of Nigerian  police, during the Second Republic.

Adewusi died in the National Hospital Abuja after some illness.

The man who became the youngest officer to be appointed a commissioner and inspector-general had his career tainted by his role in deploying the police force to aid the ruling National Party of Nigeria in massively rigging the 1983 elections.

He was appointed police  Commissioner at 32. He also became the Inspector General of police at  45. He was installed years after his retirement as Asiwaju of his native town of Ogbomosho in Oyo State.

He was born as  Sunday Adedayo Adewusi  in the Nassarawa Eggon LGA of Nassarawa State to the family of Pa Abraham Ishola Adeyinka Adewusi and Princess Eyiolawi Abeje.

He started schooling in the area of his birth but completed his primary education at Baptist Day School, Jos in 1950.

He had his secondary education in Keffi and joined the Nigerian police as a cadet in 1957.

In his distinguished police career, he was appointed ADC to the Governor-General, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe in 1959

 

He also attended various police courses in the United Kingdom.

He was conferred with National Honours of Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) in 1981 by the NPN government  and Grand Commander of the order of the Niger (GCON) in 1999.
