Barcelona trounce River Plate for third Club World Cup

Messi and Suarez rejoice after another goal

Barcelona have won their third FIFA World Cup, after a comprehensive defeat of Club Atletico River Plate, from Argentina. Scoreline: Barcelona 3, River Plate nil.

A brace from Luis Suarez and a Lionel Messi strike against River Plate in Yokohama were all the Spanish giants needed to overwhelm their opponents and lift their third crown.

And they would have even scored more except that the trio of Suarez, Messi and Neymar squandered many chances.

Messi who missed the club’s first match in Japan, struck in 36th minute, with Suarez who recorded a hat-trick in the semi-final, increasing the tally in the 49th and 68th minute.

Messi, Suarez and Iniesta, with all their awards

In the match played earlier, Sanfrecce Hiroshima had claimed the bronze, beating Luis Felipe Scolaris Guangzhou Evergrande, 2-1.

Barcelona trio, Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and midfielder Andres Iniesta also scooped all the available awards at the end of the match.

With five goals, Suarez won the Adidas Golden ball and Alibaba E-auto award, while Messi won the Adidas Silver ball. Iniesta is returning to Barcelona with the Adidas Bronze Ball. Barca also got the fair play award.
