Nigeria’s Super Eagles settled for a goalless draw with minnows, Swaziland at Somhlolo National Stadium, Lobamba this evening.
There was little to write about as the Eagles, despite parading the likes of Mikel Obi, Obafemi Martins, Ahmed Musa and Kelechi Iheanacho failed to live up to their super power status.
The match was goalless at the end of the first half and nothing much changed in the second half as the Eagles attack was rarely able to overwhelm the Swazi defence.
There were few shots at goal though, but none stretched the Swazi keeper, Nhlanhla Gwebu.
Former Nigerian international, Jonathan Akpoborie, wondered why Sunday Oliseh and his Eagles could not win an important away fixture, which happened to be the first match in the qualifying series.
Akpoborie lamented that the away draw was not only a bad signal but a sign of a deplorable state of the Nigerian senior national team.
“I must confess, we are not doing well as a team. The performance of these Eagles against Swaziland was one of the worst I will see under Oliseh. This was a match we supposed to win on a good day, but we went to Swaziland to play a draw. It’s not good for us at all, ” Akpoborie said.
Nigeria will have a chance to redeem themselves on 17 November at Adokiye Amiesimeka Stadium, Port Harcourt when they next host Swaziland in the second leg of Round Two of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers.
Nigeria was not the only superpower stunned today, Ghana playing away in Comoro Island was also held to a goalless draw.
Kenya beat Cape Verde by a lone goal in Nairobi and in Antanarive in Madagascar, Senegal also drew 2-2.
In contrast, Ivory Coast beat Liberia in Monrovia and Tunisia also beat Mauritania 2-1 in Nouakchott. An Cameroon slammed Niger 3-0 in Niamey.
