Nigerians scavenging for the contaminated chicken

I needed to verify this story before sharing. My source at the Customs service says “I’m afraid, I think it happened”.
Now this is the gist.

Men of the Nigerian Customs service seized tonnes and tonnes of contaminated chicken from fraudulent businessmen who had the mind of smuggling them into Nigeria to sell.

The goods were buried at Trailer Park at Ebubu in Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers. Nigerians in the neighbourhood got wind of it and went there to scavenge. There was a mad rush, bicycles and motorcycles carried the looted ‘poison’ home. A very disturbing video shows some of the scavengers even fighting themselves over the poisonous chicken.

Now, I hear, but I can’t independently verify, that some of these scavengers are selling their loot to unsuspecting buyers.

That is very frightening to say the least and I’d like to advise that we remain vigilant, especially in that axis where this show of shame played out: Rivers State and its environs.

Live chicken is better

I am hoping an epidemic does not trail this incident. I am hoping that the health care professionals and agencies are looking into this.

Having said that let me introduce you to one of my ‘local’ habits. As a matter of choice, I hardly ever do frozen chicken and stuff. No!

I have been to farms abroad where these chickens are made to grow like magic! They pump so much chemicals into them to aid growth, so much so that in a few weeks, a chic is a giant! It is then slaughtered, dressed, preserved in more chemicals and shipped here for us to eat. Even if and when I have to eat frozen chicken, maybe at functions, I don’t eat the skin and I don’t crush the bones. The bones harbour the cells and all the residue of chemicals.

Friends, I am a local chicken freak and addict. Yes, local chicken. There’s a village market I go to buy my stuff, they slaughter and dress them for me. The chickens are grown on grains in the villages. Come to think of it, how many villagers can afford the expensive feeds used to grow poultry fowls? The grains are cheaper for them. Besides, local chicken are tastier, oh, so tasty.
