Ahead of another planned protest in Port Harcourt, Rivers, the State Police Command has placed its officers and men on red alert with a stern warning to members of the Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, to steer clear of Port Harcourt and Rivers in any planned protest in state or face the full weight of the law.
Musa Kimo, the Rivers state Commissioner of Police, gave the stern warning in his office at the state Police headquarters in Moscow Road, Port Harcourt.
The state Police boss said “Intelligence reports reaching the Command have it that some people who do not mean well for the state and country claiming to be MASSOB protesting for Biafra are planning to stage protests in Port Harcourt, Rivers State and disturb the peace we have been enjoying in the state. We will not allow it. We are fully ready to deal decisively with anybody or group that would want to disturb the peace of the state in any guise”.
He warned members of the public, especially parents, to warn their children to steer clear of Port Harcourt and Rivers State.
The pro-Biafra group has been protesting against the arrest and detention of Nnamdi Kanu, the Director of Radio Biafra by security agencies.
Meanwhile, about 20 supporters of MASSOB facing trial before a Chief Magistrate’s Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, were denied bail by the court when their case came up before a Magistrate Court presided over by Chief Magistrate Andrew Jaja.
The accused persons were charged with conspiracy and treason, after protesting on 20 October in Port Harcourt, in solidarity with the Director of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, who was arrested by security operatives.
In his ruling, the trial Chief Magistrate, Andrew Jaja, stated that the court lacked jurisdiction to entertain the matter based on Section 118 of the Criminal Code.
Jaja said the accused persons, who committed felony, would be convicted to death, if found guilty and referred their case to the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice.
He further ruled that the accused persons should be remanded in the prison custody pending the outcome of the DPP’s advice and adjourned the case till November 26 for mention.
