The Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, Irrua, Edo State, has recorded a medical feat, with the successful hips and knees replacement surgery on some of its patients.

The leader of the surgical team of the Federal Government-owned health institution, Dr. C.O. Nwokike, announced the achievements at the hospital’s quarterly seminar on Tuesday, where he presented the graphic details of how the surgery which lasted over nine hours, in the case of the knee replacement, was carried out.

He told the audience which included the Chief Medical Director of the Hospital, Dr. Sylvanus Akhalufo Okogbenin and other senior management staff how they succeeded in the operation even in the face of lack of modern equipment and attributed part of the success to the training he received from abroad.

Dr. Nwokike explained that when the total hip surgery was carried out, it took almost the same effort and carefulness to avert errors, adding that at the end of it all, success was recorded.

A video display of one of the patients who was almost paralyzed, showed the patient walking after just four days post operation.

In their respective comments, Prof. S.O. Abbah, a Consultant Public Health and Prof. J.E. Onuminya, a Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon, expressed delight at the achievement.
