US Secretary of State, John Kerry, said his country would increase the number of refugees it would take in from across the globe over the next two years.

Kerry made the remarks on Monday during a meeting in Berlin with German Foreign Minister, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, on the current refugee crisis, especially in Europe.

He assured that the US would accept 85,000 refugees from around the world in 2016, up from 70,000, adding that the number would rise to 100,000 in 2017.

Kerry, who did not give details about the exact number of Syrian refugees expected to be accepted, said that the US was ready to help in dealing with the crisis.

His pronouncement came amid growing call for the US to do more to alleviate the escalating refugee crisis.
