Justice Danladi Yakubu Umar of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, who sensationally issued an arrest warrant Friday against Senate President, Bukola Saraki, was himself the subject of a N10million graft probe by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in 2014.
Umar fell into trouble with EFCC following a petition by staff of the tribunal, who accused him of corruption.
He was also alleged to have demanded a bribe of N10million from a retired Comptroller of Customs, Mr Rasheed Taiwo, then facing trial at the tribunal over non-declaration of assets.
According to a report by Premium Times last year April, Taiwo told EFCC that he paid N1.8 million to the personal assistant of the judge.
The EFCC first invited Umar for questioning in December 2013, but he ignored the invitation. He was invited again in March. Umar showed up at the EFCC at the end of March, where he reportedly faced the commission’s interrogators.
ScanNews that reported the interrogation said Umar was granted an administrative bail by the EFCC.
Almost 18 months after, there has been no further action taken by the EFCC, which implied that the commission has no smoking gun to nail the judge.
