Workers of the Kogi State government, in central Nigeria, this morning took their anger over unpaid onto a major Nigerian highway and mounted a blockade.
The protesting workers blocked the Abuja-Lokoja highway, the main road connecting Abuja, the capital with southern Nigeria. There was no policeman on sight to restore order.
Travellers leaving Abuja and those coming to the capital city had a hectic time today as a result of the action.
The workers claimed they were being owed salary arrears of 21 months and two years of unpaid leave bonuses.
The workers, stationed at Kotonkarife, along the highway, carried placards with inscriptions “Wada must go”, “pay us our 21 months salary”, “Wada has used our money for PDP primaries “,,” Buhari must save Kogi from Wada “, ” Wada is a thief”.
Idris Wada is the governor of the state. Two days ago, he won the primary of his party, the Peoples Democratic Party to contest the election due on 21 November.
