*Governor plans a research university to solve mystery

Governor  Ibrahim Dankwambo of the north eastern Nigerian  state of Gombe has said that the far distance of underground water table below the surface of the earth in the state, required thorough research for proper explanation.

The governor made this observation when the Chairman, Governing Board of Federal University, Kashere (FUK) in Gombe, Otunba  Gbenga Daniel, paid him a courtesy call on Wednesday in Gombe.

Dankwambo: setting up university of science

He said for this reason, his administration intended establishing a University of Science and Technology, to produce the needed manpower that would conduct the research.

“We are thinking of establishing a second University of Science and Technology.

“We have a natural location and we will do our best to ensure that before the end of this tenure, we establish one.

“We will have to develop our kind of manpower that will be interested in research.
University is about research; to find out why we do not have water one kilometre below the surface of the earth in Gombe.

“We sink boreholes but one kilometre deep, we cannot find water; my belief is that we are sitting on limestone or kind of gases that we do not know, or some kind of things underground.

“So what is it that makes water not to come? Is it gas? If it is gas, what kind of gas, if it is one mineral resource or the other, what is it?” Dankwambo queried, insisting on the need to find out.

He said the University might not have to start big as he was more concerned about starting very strong.

“It does not need to be a very huge and mighty university; we will only need to start well, just like Gombe State University and Federal University, Kashere,” he said.

The governor commended the management of FUK for the level of development in the institution, as well as Gbenga Daniel, for being the first Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the University.

Speaking earlier, Daniel solicited support from governor Dankwambo in order to enhance the activities of the University.

He lauded the effort of the governor for giving priority to education, and urged him to continue the good work.
