It was not the kind of result Manchester United wanted as they drew goalless with Newcastle at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.
A dominant United with eight shots on target and none for Newcastle and 70-30 possession advantage failed to hit the ball past Newcastle’s Dutch goalkeeper Tim Krul and settled for just a point.
“We can be satisfied with the performance but not the result,” van Gaal tells BT Sport.
“We didn’t reward ourselves. I think we have created a lot of chances and we were unlucky.”
The ill-luck was the handiwork of Krul, who made a host of top saves, including a brilliant one to deny Juan Mata in the first period and an even better one after the break to prevent substitute Javier Hernandez from snatching a winner.
Newcastle, were however lucky not to be a goal down after four minutes when Wayne Rooney had the ball in the net, but was flagged offside despite replays suggesting otherwise
