Nigeria power generation has increased from 3,000 to 4,600 Megawatts, Godknows Igali, Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Power said on Wednesday.
“We are doing over 4,600MW of power on the grid and we can do better. But then this is a big improvement from about 3,000MW we had before.
“Other times when we attain 4,000, because of pipeline disruptions we go down to about 2000MW. We’ve consistently in the past two months been having over 4,500MW and we are getting close to 4,700MW,” Igali told journalists after he briefed President Muhammadu Buhari on the activities of his Ministry.
He however added that the biggest challenge was in the distribution of the power through which Nigerians can feel the increased power generation.
The Permanent Secretary said the Ministry and the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC is working with the Distribution companies to make ensure that they improve on their network, improve on the availability of transformers and the supply of meters to end cases of estimated billing.
“The Senate discussed it, NERC chairman met me this morning asking on what measures we can take in order to address the concerns raised by Nigerians. These are genuine concerns because if you don’t have light and then you see the bills all the time, it’s not a very good thing,” he added.
Igali also said NERC will soon react to the order given by the Senate that the distribution companies should stop charging fixed charges on metres.
