Estela Melendez, a 91 year old barren Chilean woman carried a pregnancy for 60 years, without knowing she was ever pregnant.
She and her husband, who is now dead were married for 74 years but the couple had been unable to have children together. And the husband, Manuel Gonzalez went to his grave aged 91, in January not believing that his wife ever conceived
She said they had both ‘suffered tremendously’.
Estela’s hidden pregnancy was only discovered recently when doctors in La Boca suspected she had a huge tumour in her womb
They sent her for an X-ray, which yielded not the tumour suspected, but a calcified foetus in her womb. Doctors said the foetus posed no health risk.
Since the discovery of the foetus, Estela has said she now considers it a reminder of the baby the pair longed for.
