The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in north western state of Jigawa, has commended Gov. Muhammad Badaru for approving five per cent increase in the basic salary of workers for leave and transport grant.
The state Chairman of the NLC, Alhaji Usma Ya’u, gave the commendation on Monday in Dutse when he led members of his executive on a courtesy visit to the governor.
“By fulfilling this electioneering campaign promise to our workers, is confirmation that you are indeed a man of honour,” Usman said.
He said that Badaru was the first governor in the state to pay workers and pensioners salary before receiving the state monthly allocation from the federal government.
“We are proud to say that among the new governors, you are the first to pay your workers and pensioners salary even before receiving the federal allocation,” he said.
The Chairman promised that the NLC and organised labour would partner with the state and federal government in the collective aspiration to build a new Nigeria.
According to him, congress is ready to work and engage the new administration in the state to evolve policies that are people-oriented for sustainable development.
Usman said the NLC welcomed the resolve of the government to build critical infrastructure that would support the diversification of the economy.
He said that being an agrarian state, Jigawa could only be transformed through the development of agriculture, saying the sector has the capacity to provide employment to thousands of people.
He expressed the willingness of labour to support the decision of the governor to make farming attractive, especially to women and youth in the state.
The chairman also urged the governor to provide modern agricultural inputs and other relevant infrastructure to assist farmers.
Responding, the governor sought the cooperation of the NLC in the ongoing verification of civil servants in the state.
He said the exercise was not to witch hunt any civil servant but ensure rationalisation of the work force.
Badaru solicited the support of congress for his programmes and policies to enable his administration succeed.
