Bastian Schweinsteiger, the 30 year old German and Bayern Munich midfielder will have a medical on Sunday before completing the switch to Manchester United.

Schweinsteiger’s contract with Bayern expires 2016, but he has chosen to terminate it.

United announced in a club statement on Saturday that they had reached an agreement to sign him.

The Old Trafford club hope to complete the medical to enable Schweinsteiger, the new Red Devil recruit to be involved in their tour of the US.

Louis van Gaal’s men fly out to America on Monday afternoon and will be based in Seattle for their first game against Mexican team Club America on Friday, according to the BBC.

Bayern’s chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said: “It’s regrettable because Bastian meant a great deal to the club.

“He achieved great things but he wants to do something new at the end of his career. He asked that we meet his wishes.

“We tried to convince him to stay with Bayern Munich. But I also understand that a player who has spent 17 years at Bayern Munich still wants to gain a new experience.”

Schweinsteiger began playing for Bayern Munich in 2002 and had made 500 first team appearances and scored 67 goals. He joined the German national team in 2004. He had featured in 111 games and scored 23 goals.

He was part of the Bayern team that won the Champions League two years ago and Bundesliga eight times.

United also announced yesterday that it has signed Torino defender Matteo Darmian on a four-year contract with the option to extend for a further year.

Darmian, 25, has made 146 appearances and scored 5 league goals for Torino since his debut in 2011. The defender has 13 international caps for Italy and was part of their World Cup squad last summer in Brazil.

Matteo Darmian said: “It is a dream come true to be joining Manchester United. I have loved the time that I have spent at Torino and I would like to thank the club and the fans for everything they have done for me. I am sure they can understand when the opportunity to join the biggest club in world came along it was something I had to do.

Louis van Gaal said: “Matteo is a right-sided full back with the versatility of also being able to play on the left. He is a strong defender and has the ability to go forward in the attacking positions which is a fantastic attribute to have and much needed in the fast rhythm of the Premier League.

“Matteo will be a great addition to the team. I am delighted to welcome Matteo to the club and look forward to working with him in the coming days.”
