With a debt burden of N300 billion left by his predecessor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State on Tuesday inaugurated a 10-man committee to boost internally generated revenue (IGR) capacity of the state.

The governor said at the inauguration in Kano that the committee should explore available options to generate revenue internally.

He said the measure was taken to reduce the state’s dependence on the monthly allocation from the federation account.

“We must generate revenue locally and provide the enabling environment for economic activities to thrive in the state,’’ he said.

Ganduje said the committee would develop new ways of generating revenue in line with constitutional provision.

He urged the committee to develop “workable innovations and implementable strategies’’ to raise revenue internally into the state coffer.

He said the committee should critically examine the state’s IGR methods and advise government on how to substantially improve on the performance.

“You must help us in getting enough resources for the state by pushing the revenue generation agencies to work and blocking all the leakages that we have,’’ he said.

The Chairman of the committee, Prof. Kabiru Dandago, said the committee would work towards achieving the set objectives.

Dandago thanked the governor for finding them worthy of the assignment and promised to submit the report within four weeks.
