Fuel scarcity: UI shuts down for two weeks

Following a mild protest today by the students of the University of Ibadan, (UI) over shortage of water and lack of power supply on the campus, the institution’s authorities have suspended lectures for two weeks and ordered the students to vacate the school immediately.

The Director of Communication, Mr. Olatunji Oladejo who confirmed the suspension said that after the committee of provosts and directors reviewed the critical situation in the country as it affects the running of the university especially lack of fuel to generate electricity and water supply, the committee recommended to the vice chancellor, Professor Isaac Adewole to suspend academic activities for the students.

He said further that the recommendation, wholeheartedly accepted by the VC propelled him on behalf of the senate to ask the students to immediately go on two week mid semester break from today May 25, 2015 to Sunday 7 June 2015.

“The school will resume academic activities on Monday June 8 2015. All students are hereby asked to vacate the halls of resident with immediate effect.”

Oladejo further clarified that the break given to the students does not affect other activities in the school stressing that lecturers and other staff of the school are expected to resume at their various duty posts every day.

“Also, the institution’s spokesman said that Professor Niyi Osundare’s international programme scheduled for tomorrow and Wednesday would hold as scheduled.
