In the final figures released by Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission, the All Progressives Congress Sunday won governorship elections in the economic capital Lagos, fighting off a tough challenge from outgoing President Goodluck Jonathan’s party.

Akinwunmi Ambode took 811,994 votes in the key battleground state, beating out Jimi Agbaje of the Peoples Democratic Congress (PDP), who won 659,788 votes.

The state’s Collation Officer, Prof. Isaac Adewole, the Vice Chancellor of University of Ibadan, said Ambode won in 14 local government areas, while his PDP rival clinched six local councils.
