Plans by the English Football Association to present a Great Britain men’s and women’s team at the 2016 Olympics in Rio have fell through.

This comes after the English FA’s plan did not receive support from other home nations, as required by world football governing body FIFA to allow GB football team’s participation.

Scotland refused to back the plan, as it feared such would threaten its independent status with world football governing body FIFA.

The Scots added that their cooperation to allow a GB football team in 2012 was based on the notion that it would be a one-off occurrence.

Wales meanwhile is reported to be against the plan as well.

Great Britain was represented in the football event of the 2012 Olympics hosted by London and the hope was for same to materialise for the Rio games.
