Russia and Montenegro have been charged by European football governing body UEFA for violent scenes during the Euro 2016 qualifying match between both sides in Podgorica last weekend.
Both nations have been charged with “throwing of fireworks and other missiles by fans”, while Montenegro received an additional charge of “holding a match that was not played in full.”
The Group G match was initially suspended for about half-hour, after Russia goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev was struck on the head by a flare in the very first minute of the encounter.
Akinfeev had to be stretchered out and taken to a local hospital, where he was discharged after receiving treatment, as injury sustained were not deemed major by medical staff.
The tense encounter was then abandoned by the referee Deniz Aytekin in the 67th minute with the scoreline still goalless following a brawl between players and officials of both sides.
The brawl broke after Russia’s Dmitri Kombarov was struck by a missile from the stands, moments after teammate Roman Shirokov had seen his penalty saved.
