Shane Long struck in stoppage time for Republic of Ireland to help secure a dramatic 1-1 draw with Group D leaders Poland in a Euro 2016 qualifier in Dublin on Sunday.
With world champions Germany as well as Scotland winning their matches earlier, Poland needed to avoid defeat at Ireland in order to regain sole custody of top spot in the group.
Poland edged a close first half when Slawomir Peszko broke the deadlock midway through, after Ireland’s Rob Brady was dispossessed in midfield.
The Irish men however regained control of the encounter and came close to an equaliser five minutes into the second half when a cross in from Brady was deflected onto the Polish post.
Veteran striker Robbie Keane then saw a header pushed onto the post by Łukasz Fabianski with just under 20 minutes left to play, as Poland looked set to claim a vital win on the road.
But Long came through for the Irish a minute into injury time, with the substitute controlling a loose ball in the area off a Brady cornerkick before slotting past Fabianski for the equaliser.
The result in Dublin sees Poland go a point clear of Group D with 11 points, with Germany and Scotland following with 10 points each and Ireland in fourth place with eight points.
Elsewhere in Euro 2016 qualifying, Portugal went top of Group I with a 2-1 win over Serbia while Albania came from a goal down to record same result as Portugal against Armenia in the group’s other match on Sunday.
