Nigerians will not just be electing a new president on Saturday, they will also be electing 109 senators and 360 members of the House of Representatives.

The competitions to fill the seats are keen among the candidates across the 36 states and the Federal Capital of Abuja.

There are 950 contestants for the Senate from the various parties, with a number of them old faces who want to return to the upper chamber of Nigeria’s legislature. Senate president, David Mark leads the pack of senators keen to return. He is going for the fifth term.

There are also Senator Smart Adeyemi who is running for the third term on the ruling People’s Democratic Party platform and Senator Gbenga Ashafa from Lagos State, who is running for the second term on the All Progressives Congress platform.

In Asia state, the riveting contest will be between former governor Orji Uzor Kalu, running on Progressive People’s Alliance, a party he founded, against the candidate of his former party, the PDP. Orji wants the Abia North Seat. But analysts predict a tough contest.

In Ogun State, the contest for the Ogun East senatorial seat will also be interesting. There are the incumbent, Gbenga Kaka, now of the Social Democratic Party, oil mogul, Dapo Abiodun, of the All Progressives Congress and Buruji Kashamu of the Peoples Democratic Party. The latter, a fugitive from the United States, is wanted in connection with drug trafficking.

The House of Representatives has over 1,600 contestants from 28 parties. And just like the Senate, all the seats will also be fiercely contested.
