English interest in Europe was ended this season after Everton fell to a crushing 5-2 defeat at Dynamo Kyiv in a UEFA Europa League last 16 second leg encounter on Thursday.

With Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City bowing out of the more lucrative UEFA Champions League over the last week, Everton went into the match in Ukraine looking to salvage some pride for the English Premier League.

But a slender 2-1 lead for the Merseyside club from the first leg was overturned after a ruthless first half display from Dynamo Kyiv in the second leg.

Andriv Yarmolenko had put the Ukrainians ahead midway through the first half while further goals from Łukasz Teodorczyk and Miguel Veloso dimmed the hope Romelu Lukaku’s 29th minute equaliser had given Everton.

Oleh Husyev made it 4-1 on the night while Antunes put the result beyond doubt with a fifth 15 minutes to the end.

Phil Jagielka pulled one back for Everton late on but the goal was mere consolation as Dynamo Kyiv sealed passage to the quarterfinal stage with a 6-4 aggregate win.

Also through to the last eight are Napoli, which played out a goalless draw at Dinamo Moscow to seal a 3-1 aggregate win, and Fiorentina, which pulled off a 3-0 at Italian rivals AS Roma to win 3-0 on aggregate.

Torino meanwhile failed to join fellow Italians Fiorentina and Napoli in the last eight as a laat gasp 1-0 win over Russian champions Zenit St. Petersburg was not enough to overturn a 2-0 first leg deficit.

Elsewhere, Nicklas Bendtner scored the winner for Wolfsburg in a 2-1 win at Inter Milan, to complete a 5-2 aggregate win for the Bundesliga side.

Defending champions Sevilla also won 5-2 on aggregate against fellow Spaniards Villarreal while Club Brugge came from behind to win 3-1 at Beşiktaş for another 5-2 aggregate win as well as a sixth successive win for the Belgian club.
