Thomas Müller scored twice for Bayern Munich while Olexandr Kucher was sent off for Shakhtar Donetsk as the Ukrainian club fell to a 7-0 demolition in a UEFA Champions League round of 16 second leg match in Munich.

The result ensured the German champions equalled the record for biggest win in the competition, a record first set ironically by Shakhtar during the group stages.

Having been frustrated to a goalless draw in the first leg a fortnight ago, it took all of four minutes for the Bavarians to take the lead in front of their home fans courtesy of Müller’s penalty, earned at the expense of Kucher who was sent off after being adjudged as the last man when he brought down Mario Götze.

Robert Lewandowski saw a header come off the post midway through the first half, with the Polish striker eventually involved in the second goal when his saved shot on goal spilled to the path of Jerome Boateng who scored from close range just after the half-hour mark.

Müller saw an effort sail just wide two minutes after Boateng’s goal, but the attacking midfielder bagged his brace six minutes into the second half following up on a loose ball in the Shakhtar area two minutes after Franck Ribery had scored Bayern’s third.

Müller’s goal was his 26th in the UEFA Champions League, making him the highest scoring German in the competition.

Defender Holger Badstuber headed in Bayern’s fifth right after the hour mark while Lewandowski and Götze completed the record result with respective goals in the 75th and 87th minute.
