Sunderland and England midfielder Adam Johnson was arrested by Durham Police shortly before the Black Cats made for a trip to Hull City for a Premier League clash on Tuesday.

The former Manchester City and Middlesbrough player, who has since posted bail according to the Police, was taken into custody on suspicion of having sex with a 15-year old girl.

27-year old Johnson has as a result been suspended by the club and will be unavailable for the club pending the completion of police investigation on the matter.

The Premier League club stated it would make no further comment on the arrest of Johnson, who has represented England 12 times.
