Christian Benteke scored a 94-minute penalty to hand Aston Villa a dramatic 2-1 in a Midlands derby win over Brown Ideye’s West Bromwich-Albion in the Premier League on Tuesday.

West Brom goalkeeper Ben Foster saved on the line after a goal bound effort went through his legs, but Gabriel Agbonlahor soon put Villa ahead midway through the first half with an effort through Foster’s legs.

Saido Berahino pulled level for West Brom soon after the hour mark and seemed enough to earn the visitors a point until Belgian striker Benteke converted a spot kick deep in stoppage time.

The result saw Villa rise out of the relegation zone for a day at least, as well as gave Villa manager Tim Sherwood his first win since taking the helm at Villa Park.

Elsewhere in the Premier League, Sadio Mane pounced on a rebound off a poor save from Crystal Palace goalkeeper Speroni to give Southampton a 1-0 win at St. Mary’s Stadium as the Saints rose above Liverpool into fifth place.

And at the KC Stadium, managers Steve Bruce and Gus Poyet were kept apart by match officials as Hull City and Sunderland played out a 1-1 draw.

Sunderland manager Poyet had been expelled to the stands after kicking over a cooler of drinks at the touchline in protest of referee Mike Dean’s decision to award a foul against his side in the 36th minute.

Tempers then threatened to spill over when Poyet went over to shake hands with Hull boss Bruce, who was provoked by the move and made at Sunderland’s Uruguayan manager.

Meanwhile on the pitch, Dame N’Doye had given Hull a 15th minute lead but Jack Rodwell’s header 13 minutes to the end earned Sunderland a share of the spoils.

Premier League action will continue on Wednesday night, with leaders Chelsea – that won the League Cup on Sunday – away at West Ham United while Manchester City welcome Leicester City to the Etihad.

Manchester United visit Newcastle United while Arsenal will be out for a fourth successive league win when they visit Queens Park Rangers.
