Arjen Robben and Thomas Müller each scored twice as a rampant Bayern Munich crushed Hamburg 8-0 while Bas Dost scored four times as Wolfsburg overcame Bayer Leverkusen 5-4 in another Bundesliga match on Saturday.
Bayern had returned from the winter break with a shock 4-1 loss at second placed Wolfsburg, but were back to their sublime best against a hapless Hamburg side that has fallen to heavy defeats in its last four trips to the Allianz Arena.
Müller put the Bavarians in front after 20 minutes from the penalty spot before Mario Götze added a second just two minutes later.
Robben then scored a goal either side of the break to have Pep Guardiola’s side 4-0 early in the second half; his second an exquisite curling effort which went in off the post after sailing over several Hamburg players.
Robert Lewandowski added got on the scoresheet with a simple tap-in before Müller got his second with a well struck long range effort.
Franck Ribery marked his return from a thigh injury with the seventh before Götze completed the rout late on with a fierce strike.
Wolfsburg however kept pace with Bayern at the top of the league, with Bas Dost scoring the winner for the visitors in a highly dramatic encounter at Leverkusen.
A Bas Dost brace either side of Naldo’s goal had put the Wolves 3-0 up by the half-hour mark the visitors looked to build on their win over Bayern.
Leverkusen however responded with goals either side of the hour mark from Emir Spahic and Heung-Min Son to reduce the deficit.
Dost however got his hattrick a minute after Son’s goal to give Wolfsburg a two-goal cushion with 25 minutes left to play.
But Leverkusen erased that lead in the space of seven minutes as Son – with his second – and Karim Bellarabi made scores 4-4 after 72 minutes.
It seemed Leverkusen had done just enough to earn a point from a thrilling encounter but Wolfsburg would have the last say through Dost who scored the winner three minutes into stoppage time.
