The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said on Monday that it had so far registered 5,000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) following last Sunday’s insurgents’ attack on Monguno, in Borno state.

The NEMA North-East Zonal Information Officer, Malam Abdulkadir Ibrahim, said this in a statement in Maiduguri.

“The North-East office of NEMA in conjunction with the Borno Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), has so far registered 5,000 IDPs trooping into Maiduguri following last Sunday’s attack on Monguno, headquarters of Monguno Local Government Area.

“A state government housing estate under construction on Gubio Road, Maiduguri, has been converted to a refugee camp for the IDPs,” Ibrahim said.

“Emergency workers have moved to the camp to provide water and medicals to the displaced persons on arrival.

“Initial needs assessment has been conducted and efforts are being made to provide the needs,” he said.

The information officer said NEMA was making efforts to provide the IDPs with tents, bedding and foodstuff which, according to him, were their immediate needs.
